Trefriw Trails is a community-led development project improving access to paths in and around the village of Trefriw in North Wales. To date, nine trails have been developed ranging in distance, difficulty and taking in a wide variety of terrain. The Trails are all existing rights of way but have been waymarked with signs to assist visitors to the area. In most cases the trails are marked to be walked in one direction only, starting and finishing in the village of Trefriw. There are many other footpaths and rights of way that can be used by walkers in the area. For more details, see the Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 map of Snowdonia Outdoor Leisure Map 17. Trail 1 - All Abilities Trail - 1 mile / 25 minutes - A short, even walk from Trefriw to the River Conwy. Retrace your steps to the village, or alternatively, cross the suspension bridge for Llanrwst and Llanrwst North railway station. Trail 2 - Riverside Trail - Circular walk - 2.5 miles / 60 minutes - This trail can be started either from Trefriw, or from the suspension bridge over the River Conwy near to Llanrwst North railway station. Starting behind the public toilets in the village, follow the River Crafnant to its confluence with the River Conwy then enjoy a peaceful walk upstream to join Trail 1 at the suspension bridge for the return to Trefriw. Trail 3 - Wetland Walk - Circular walk along flat ground - 1 mile / 30 minutes - This short circular walk branches off Trail 2 at a footbridge over the River Crafnant. Trail 4 - Fairy Falls - Circular Walk with some uphill - 0.5 miles / 25 minutes - From the car park in the centre of the village, cross the main road in front of the Woollen Mill and turn right. At the end of the row of shops, opposite the Fairy Falls Hotel - turn left and walk up the hill. After a few yars, turn left onto the waymarked Trail 4 that will take you to the Falls. From the Falls, climb up to the footbridge for a different view, then descend by road or re-trace your steps back to the centre of the village. Trail 5 - Geirionydd & Crafnant Lakes - Circular Walk, steep in places - 5 miles / 3 hours - The twin lakes of Llyn Geirionydd and Llyn Crafnant are easily accessible to walkers from Trefriw following this trail, which branches off Trail 4 at the bridge above the Fairy Falls. The trail takes you through woodlands with fine views of the beautiful Crafnant valley before arriving at the northern end of Llyn Geirionydd and circling around to Llyn Crafnant. Once at Llyn Crafnant you can follow Forest Enterprise trails around the lake. To return to Trefriw, descent along the road for a short distance before joining Trail 7. Trail 6 - Woodland Walk - Circular Walk, steep in places - 2 ¼ miles / 1 hour 30 minutes - The trail starts on the road to Llyn Cowlyd just above the village centre and takes you into the forest just above the village and provides some fine views of the Conwy and Crafnant valleys and the peak of Moel Siabod beyond. Trail 7 - Woods & Valleys Walk - Circular Walk, steep in places - 3 ¼ miles / 1 hour 45 minutes - Follow Trail 6 to the highest point in the forest, then branch off to descend into the Crafnant Valley. After a short stretch of road, the trail follows the River Crafnant back to the village via the Fairy Falls. Trail 8 - Llanrhychwyn Church - Circular Walk, steep in places - 4 miles / 2 hours 30 minutes - This route branches off Trail 5 as it climbs towards Llyn Geirionydd and takes you to the sixth century church at Llanrhychwyn before descending through woodland back to the village. Trail 9 - Llyn Cowlyd - Snowdonia Leisure Walk, steep in places This trail forms part of the Snowdonia National Park Leisure Walks Network and provides a link to walks in and around Capel Curig. Trail 9 branches off Trail 6 and climbs up to provide some stunning views of the Conwy Valley. The trail continues to Llyn Cowlyd and then along the reservoir to its head. The Trefriw Trail ends here and you can re-trace your steps. Alternatively, you can join trails in and around Capel Curig to extend your walk, including a trail that returns to Trefriw via Llyn Crafnant. For further details and more detailed route descriptions please see the weblink - www.trefriwtrails.org.uk Some of the trails will take you away from main roads and over rough terrain. Please note that the weather can change very quickly, so be prepared. When walking in the hills, always wear suitable clothing and footwear and take adequate refreshments. Some trails cross farmland or go through forests. They may be muddy and livestock may be in the fields. Only attempt routes that you can manage. Before attempting any serious exercise always consult you doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. All distances and timings are approximate. |
