Tryfan - the perfect mountain

What makes the perfect mountain for the outdoor enthusiast?  It must be beautiful, but accessible; it must provide interest for all abilities in all weathers and seasons; it must be lofty, but not intimidating.

Tryfan's classic profile must be the most captured mountain image in Snowdonia, instantly recognisable in photographs, postcards and paintings.  Yet this soaring ridge rises from the very kerb of the A5 between Capel Curig and Bethesda, a single gate separating the road from its foot.

Being so beautiful and accessible, Tryfan is rarely deserted but its visitors are spread over its ridges and faces, and drawn into its gullies and paths.  The East Face provides rock climbers with classic routes of such length and quality that they were the chosen training for Sir Edmund Hillary and the first successful Everest mountaineers.  The North Ridge is a great introduction to mountain scrambling where both feet and hands are needed to make progress, there are many variations in the route suitable for all abilities.  If you want to stay firmly on your feet then outflanking the mountain and approaching from the South is recommended.

However you make your way to the summit you will be greeted by Adam and Eve, two natural monoliths on the highest point.  The short jump from one to the other is a rite of passage for many mountain walkers.  At 915m Tryfan is not the highest peak in the area but its position gives splendid views and a feeling of space.

The summit may be your ambition for the day, or you may want to go further up to the Glyders.  The ascent of Bristly Ridge, another classic Grade 1 scramble, to Glyder Fach and a descent of Y Gribin completes one of the finest mountain days Snowdonia has to offer.

However you want to climb this mountain, Outdoor Horizons can guide you, helping you to get the most from your day without the worry of route finding or dealing with unfamiliar steep ground.  Our guides have climbed Tryfan all ways, in all weathers, and can plan and lead a route that takes account of your personal abilities and aspirations.

So contact us and come with us to Tryfan, in our opinion the perfect mountain!
