Gwydir Castle Llanrwst

Gwydir Castle, the ancestral home of the wealthy and influential Wynn family, stands around three quarters of a mile west of the town of Llanrwst, . The manor house was begun around 1490 and occupied the site of a previous fortified house at the location.

The building represents a superb example of Tudor architecture and is fairly regarded as one of the finest Tudor houses in Wales. The Wynn family were one of the most significant families in Wales during the Tudor and Stuart periods.

At the centre of castle stands a three storey solar tower. Gwydir has recieved royal visitors in the course of its long history. The Stuart king, Charles I, later beheaded on the orders of Parliament, stayed as the guest of Sir Richard Wynn in September 1645. More recently, in Victorian times, the future King George V, then known as the Duke of York, also stayed at the castle as a guest, along with his wife, Princess Mary of Teck, later Queen Mary, in 1899.

Gwydir Castle has the reputation of being one of the most haunted houses in the whole of Wales and has several resident ghosts.

The gardens are superb, the Dutch Garden contains Cedars of Lebanon which are over three hundred years old, being planted in 1625. The gardens also boast a fountain and peacocks
