Mountain Safe: Free Mountain Navigation Course

In an attempt to reduce the ever increasing mountain accidents in Snowdonia, a study has been undertaken of Mountain Rescue incidents over the past 6 years.  The results profile people most at risk, the type of incidents that were most common, where the incidents took place and where the people involved came from. The findings of the study also highlighted the fact that 60% of the people requesting rescue were uninjured. This indicates that the majority of people needing rescue were either lost or stuck.  Perhaps with some basic navigational skills those people involved could have either prevented themselves getting misplaced or trapped in the first instance or affected self-rescue in the second.

The Statutory Authorities responsible for the provision of a Mountain Rescue service, together with the North Wales Mountain Rescue Association have launched a ‘Mountain Safe’ initiative aimed at preventing the people most at risk from becoming lost or stuck when they head into the mountains of Snowdonia. As part of this initiative we are holding a free one-day mountain navigation course at the Plas y Brenin on Sunday 15th March 2009. The training will be delivered by members of Snowdonia’s Mountain Rescue Teams and Plas y Brenin’s professional staff It is aimed at the novice hill walker/mountaineer and we would hope to provide you with some of the skills necessary to head safely into the mountains in the future.
