Moel Famau and Moel y Gamelin

These are two North East Wales summits that are easy to reach and give an enjoyable couple of hours walking.

MOEL FAMAU is near Ruthin, and is reached by a gentle 30 minute walk from Bwlch Penbarras (map ref. 162606). On the summit, all that remains of the Jubilee Tower is its base – the rest of this uncompleted Egyptian style obelisk was destroyed in a storm in 1862. Moel Famau is a great place to be for sunrise or sunset. There are excellent views over the Vale of Clwyd to one side, and towards Liverpool the other. The whole of Snowdonia is laid out to the west.

MOEL Y GAMELIN is approached from the summit of the Horseshoe Pass, between Llangollen and Ruthin. It is approached in about 40 minutes over Moel y Faen, from where there are good views to Moel Famau. The views from Moel y Gamelin to the south, and along the Dee Valley are worth the walk. This whole area is vibrant with heather colours in mid August.
