Carreg Samson is a Neolithic burial chamber, or dolmen, near the village of Abercastle in North Pembrokeshire (Map – OL35, North Pembrokeshire, map ref. 849335). Samson is nowhere near as well known as the impressive Pentre Ifan burial chamber, but is just as worth a visit. It does not have quite the scale of Pentre Ifan, but where it makes up for this is in its position high above the sea, looking to the rugged Strumble Head. Although it is possible to park and walk in from the nearby Longhouse Farm, far better to park in Abercastle. Follow the path along the southern side of the picturesque natural harbour area, which is protected by Ynys Castell (Castle Island). The path rises to the cliff top, where there are good views over the island. However, take the path to the left, heading inland up an attractive little valley. Carreg Samson is in the cow field ahead - watch where you step! You do not fully appreciate its unique position until you look at it from the far side |
