Our daughter, Abi (15 years old), is taking on an ambitious sponsored challenge this summer. Known as ‘The Welsh 3000’s’, there are 15 mountains over 3,000 feet high in Wales. Abi wants to climb all these inside 24 hours, without the use of any transport between them, or bottled oxygen. This will be an effort of around 38 miles and involve 14,000 feet of ascent. Some of it is over rocky ground with big drops, such as the well known knife-edge ridge of Crib Goch. Ali, her mum, has always wanted to do the Welsh 3000’s also, but would have preferred a rather more ‘leisurely’ 2 days. She has decided to join Abi on her venture. Myself and others will be providing back up, with fresh people joining them on each range of mountains and keeping an eye on their strength and sanity in the latter stages. Others will meet them in the valleys to drop and pick up the helpers and to re-stock them with food and drink. The proposed date for the trip is somewhere in the week 30th July to 3rd August – the actual day being decided by the weather. Abi has a desire to help children in a less fortunate position than herself, so any money raised will be going to ‘The Children of Tien Shan’. This centre is based in Balykchy, Kyrgyzstan, and works with orphaned and abandoned children, giving them a loving home and a chance to join mainstream education. The centre is run by Irina and Dima Trofimov, who currently work with 21 children. They are backed and partnered by Tear Fund (UK charity no. 265464), through whom the sponsorship will be passed. A friend of ours, Miriam Evans, is Tear Fund’s Wales representative – she and a few other locals with interest are visiting The Children of Tien Shan in the next month or two, and will report back their needs and progress. If any of you wish to personally sponsor Abi’s challenge, or even to take a form and coerce a few other sponsors, please let us know. What Abi and Ali are taking on is a real challenge, and total success is by no means a foregone conclusion, so it is preferred that people sponsor per summit achieved in the day.
