2008 Calendar for Wales

The front cover of the 2008 Wales Calendar is taken at Llanddwyn Island. If you have never visited, then I highly recommend it. This is a special place, with 2 lighthouses, 2 large crosses, and the remains of St. Dwynwen’s chapel – she is the Welsh patron saint of lovers! For photographers and the romantic amongst you, the times around sunrise and sunset offer plenty of atmospheric possibilities – for the more sane, take a walk out to the island at a more sensible time of day. We recently took a visit with the kids and grandparents on a stormy day, when huge waves were crashing off the rocks around the lighthouses to heights of 50 feet or so – most impressive.

Llanddwyn is only an island at the highest of tides – at most times it is easily reached on foot. Find your way on the A4080 to Newborough, near the southern tip of Anglesey. Turn south-west in the middle of the village to park at the road’s end in the forest (Forestry Commission - £2 entry fee for car). After leaving the car, find the beach, turn right, and you will see Llanddwyn Island about a mile away. 20 minutes walk, or longer if you enjoy shells and pebbles, along the lovely beach takes you to the island. Explore! If you crave a longer walk, then follow the beach the other side of Llanddwyn – there is an old wooden shipwreck in the sand on this beach.
