2008 Snowdonia Calendar

The cover of the 2008 Snowdonia Calendar features a sunrise picture of Snowdon. This is taken from high on the southern ridge of Cnicht. January’s picture of dawn over the Glaslyn Valley was taken a little earlier the same morning. These demonstrate that when out with the camera at sunrise or sunset the best pictures are not always taken towards the sun. Sometimes what the sun lights is of more interest than the blazing ball of light itself. This particular morning the sun rose from behind Moelwyn Mawr, which looked great to the eye, but just didn’t translate into a photograph of note.

Many of you will know Cnicht well, but those of you who do not, it is well worth the climb. Known as ‘the Welsh Matterhorn’ because of its distinctive pointed shape when seen from the south, the most striking route is the ridge on the southern side. Parking in the village of Croesor, the summit is reached in about 90 minutes. Most of the route is walking, but there is a short section of easy scrambling near the end.

Cnicht is a great viewpoint, which I especially like around sunrise and sunset. We have had a couple of trips with the kids, arriving on the summit around sunset. The family have their dinner there, whilst I busy myself with my camera. Returning down the ridge in the failing light all adds to the family adventure. The last time we did this was with around 20 of our Church members – we saw no sunset, the weather changed, the wind blew up, the clouds came down, but for most the challenge in adversity was enjoyed.

The return to Croesor down the south ridge only takes about an hour, but for those wanting a full day’s circular walk, the head north-east along Cnicht’s summit ridge. After about a mile, break right down a footpath off the ridge (map ref. 657478). Follow this footpath (not as obvious as the map suggests) across some wonderful wild moorland to the remails of Rhosydd Mine. This is an atmospheric abandoned village high in the mountains. Some of the buildings are still intact, others just piles of slate. Have a look inside the mine entrance, but I would only suggest exploring further inside if you have headlamps and some underground experience.

There are 2 easy routes back to Croesor from here – either down the footpath via Bwlch y Rhosydd, or take the slightly higher path to Croesor Mine, have a look around here, and take the easy track down to Croesor. If you still have plenty of energy, then to round off a great day head up from Rhosydd Mine to climb Moelwyn Mawr, along the ridge to climb Moelwyn Bach, and finally down to Croesor.
